New office bearers for the UNP

The term of office of the present office bearers of the UNP ends on 31 December 2013, and new officials are due to be appointed at the next meeting of the working committee.


Before that, the united leadership council will meet to finalise the names for these positions.

As per the UNP constitution, the leader of the party is empowered to appoint the general secretary, treasurer and the chairman.

According to Sirikotha sources, Tissa Attanayake is to be reappointed general secretary, while Kabir Hashim and a CEO in a private sector firm are to be given the positions of the chairman and the treasurer respectively.

The present officials for the other positions, including the national organizer, are expected to remain, while the position of deputy leader will continue to be vacant.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hashim says the issue of the membership of Sajith Premadasa and Thalatha Athukorale in the leadership council will be resolved at the next meeting of the council that will take place in the first week of next year.

Both members are yet to accept their positions, although Mr. Premadasa told the media yesterday after the party’s 55th convention that he has not rejected the council.
