Sri Lanka's Buddhist extremists restart fight against Halaal certification

Sri Lanka's Buddhist extremist organization Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) says that the organization would have a discussion with the Minister of Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Johnston Fernando to discuss the Halaal issue.

BBS has decided to restart the protests against the issue of Halaal certification for food and other products by Muslim organizations following the announcement by the Muslim cleric's organization All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) that it has decided to stop issuing Halaal certificates.

Addressing a media conference today, the leader of BBS, Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero demanded the authorities to entirely ban not only the Halaal certification but also the Muslim cleric's organization.

The ACJU suspended issuing Halaal certificates due to protest by the extremist Buddhist groups and decided to handover the process to a private company from 1st of January.
The organization said, following months consultations with various stakeholders, authorities, civil society representatives, it has decided that it was appropriate to allow a new independent entity to carry on the certification process.
