Sri Lanka ruling alliance party sues Prime Minister over remarks made against Buddhist clergy

A coalition partner of Sri Lanka's ruling alliance, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has sent a letter of demand to Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne claiming Rs. 1 billion.


The letter was sent to the Prime Minister over alleged remarks he has made against JHU Leader, Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thero and the Buddhist clergy.

The JHU issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Prime Minister to apologize to Ven. Sobitha Thero and the Buddhist clergy and to withdraw the comments made against them.

The party said today that legal action was initiated after the Prime Minister had failed to apologize or withdraw the comments made against the JHU Leader and the Buddhist clergy.

According to the JHU, the Prime Minister in fact has made more statements against the Buddhist clergy since then.

Jayaratne had allegedly made statements against the Buddhist clergy due to the demand for him to step down following the controversy over the detection of a large haul of heroin that was imported to the country through a person known to the Premier.
