Local government politician in Sri Lanka dies of self-immolation over debt

A local government politician of the ruling party has died today after setting himself ablaze in an attempt to commit suicide over mounting debt, the police said.


According to the Police, a United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Councilor of Yatiyantota Pradeshiya Sabha Upul Sisira Kumara has committed suicide by self-immolation.

The Councilor has set himself ablaze at his wife's house in Bulathkohupitiya Sunday night.

He was rushed to the Karawanella Base Hospital in a critical condition and later transferred to Colombo National Hospital where he has succumbed to his burn injuries this morning.
