Sri Lanka Western and Southern provincial polls on March 29

The elections for the Western and Southern provincial Councils in Sri Lanka will be held on March 29, the Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya announced today after the deadline to file nominations of candidates expired at 12 noon.


The Election Commissioner allowed parties one hour after the nomination deadline to file objections. The election date was announced after the objection period.

The ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) filed nominations for the Southern Province districts of Matara, Galle and Hambantota this morning while the nominations for the Western Province districts of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara were filed yesterday.
