The UNP said that the government's denial in allegations and inaction on taking measures to address the accountability issues have led to the current situation of the international community bringing on pressure to conduct an international investigation.
"The country is at a precipice and the government bears full responsibility for our country's current plight," the party said in a statement.
The party called on the government to address the serious allegations levelled at it instead of denying.
"A mature state does not engage in blanket denial when allegations and aspersions are cast at it," the statement said.
The main opposition party asked the President to "stop seeing enemies and conspirators where there are none" and learn, even at this late stage to "listen to what the friends in the international community are telling".
The party said as a responsible opposition, the UNP stands willing, to extend its fullest support to conduct a domestic investigation into the allegations about the final phase of the war and such an investigation should span not only the months from January-May 2009, but go deeper and investigate the atrocities committed by the LTTE..
The United States-sponsored resolution will be presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva at its 25th session beginning next month.
The Sri Lankan government has strongly resisted an international investigation into the allegations of war crimes allegedly committed by the security forces during the final stages of the 30-year war that ended in May 2009.
The government has said that the third US-sponsored resolution will bring 'chaos' to the country and will damage the sensitive reconciliation process.
